Mythology
The Measure of Time ...A maze of time as well as space transmutes the ancient into the modern, hastening the plasticity of the real into volatile and transient forms that mock our pretensions of immortality. Endowed with the traditional elemental manifestations of fire, air, earth and water, action unfolds with the logic and futility of heroism, circumscribed by the scale of time, dissected within the breadth of space, released through the fragmentation and reorientation of myth. It is a mythology made current by the invigoration of street culture, a hierarchy of signs with references in counterpoint. O Minotaurus, threading your way through the labyrinth of King Minos, appearing in the scoffing countenance of the medieval court jester, arriving finally on graffiti-dense Destiny Street, New York. O Icarus, shot down in flames above the darting waves of the old wine dark sea, to dart, once again among the fire belching chariots of Soho. Paolo Buggiani's art is one of thoughtful pageantry, incorporating the object lessons of a morality play -- fate, faith, fataltiy -- within a spectacle that guides the viewer in a personal quest, as participant/observer... -Steven L Kaplan May,1984 |
